Careers in photography (1946)

June 25, 2009

Here is a good reminder on what has changed and what has remained the same in photography, the last 40 years. Good fun to watch, and be sure to check out the web-page you’re getting redirected to (a lot of interesting and fun stuff).

Martin Parr

June 25, 2009

One of our time most distinct photographers, Martin Parr:

UPDATE:

Parr’s approach to photography can easily be transferred to short films as well. Just take a look at this clip, that can be found on this DVD:

Nan Goldin

June 23, 2009

Few artists’ lives have been as intimately interconnected with their art as Nan Goldin’s. Throughout her career, she has used photography as what she once famously called “the diary I let people read.”

First a video that introduce you to her work,

and then an artist talk video if you got interested in her work.

Stephen Shore

June 19, 2009

A little short documentary about colour pioneer Stephen Shore. He was interested in photography from an early age. Self-taught, he received a photographic darkroom kit at age six. He began to use a 35mm camera three years later and made his first color photographs. At ten he received a copy of Walker Evans’s book, American Photographs, which influenced him greatly. At age seventeen Shore met Andy Warhol and began to frequent Warhol’s studio, the Factory, photographing Warhol and the creative people that surrounded him. In 1972 Shore embarked on a series of cross-country trips and “on the road” photographs of the American landscape.

Among the first to work almost exclusively in color, Shore, in 1971, became the first living photographer to have a one-person show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Update: Read the interview made by Gill Blank here (PDF), from 2007! He has done a few other interviews with other photographers aswell, they can be found here.

Magnum photographer Alec Soth, in a couple of interviews;

Update:

A couple of days ago I bought an first edition/first print edition of Alec Soth’s book “Dog Days Bogatá”, for about 30 us dollars at my local bookshop. As you can see, that was probably a good deal 🙂

Here are a couple of new videos both at work, and a nice slideshow made by Magnum:

Helmut by June

June 18, 2009

In 2004,  Helmut Newton died in a car crash in Los Angeles at the age of 83.  By that time he had become one of the most influential photographers of all time. Born in Berlin, he arrived in Australia in 1940 and married June Brunell (a.k.a. Alice Springs) eight years later. He first achieved international fame in the 1970’s while working principally for French Vogue, and his celebrity and influence grew over the decades. Working and living in close companionship with his wife until his death, his images remain as distinctive, seductive and orginal as ever.

Brilliant documentary, made by his wife June:

Tomas van Houtryve in North-Korea

June 17, 2009

Interesting interview with American/Belgian photographer Tomas van Houtryve, who went undercover as a Belgian chocolate-maker in order to penetrate the secretive nation of North-Korea. Listen to his fascinating tale at BBC world service here, and take a look at his website here.
The pictures from the North-Korea can be found on his website, or use this direct link at Foreign Policy here. I have also added his blog to my blogroll that can be found on the left hand side of my blog.

Update:
interesting documentary about North-Korea:
